Dear Clinical Directors, Cytopathologists, Scientists and Charge Cytotechnologists Please find the registration form for the Challenges in Cytology Workshops at this link. These can be printed and completed by hand and mailed or faxed to me as per details on the form. Cost will be $150 (GST Exclusive) per participant and includes lunch and refreshments. No payment is required until registration is confirmed and you or the laboratory have received an invoice. Please return registration forms by Wednesday 25 February 2004. Diane Casey , MOH |
Please note that the number of workshops have been increased to three on the advice of the Cytology Training Working Group, who strongly recommend these workshops to senior cytoscreeners and pathologists. The dates above are provisional and will be confirmed in late January.
The workshops will accommodate 18 participants each and will be subsidised by the National Cervical Screening Programme, with final cost dependant on numbers.
Please inform Diane Casey, Project Analyst, National Screening Unit re numbers of participants for the workshops and first and second preferred locations.
Diane Casey: Phone (09) 580 9039, or Email: diane_casey@moh.govt.nz
A minimum of 2 places per laboratory has been reserved to allow one pathologist and one senior cytotechnologist with a teaching / supervisory role from each laboratory to attend.
The workshops are designed for Pathologists and experienced cytoscreeners, especially those involved in teaching. All participants will receive the "Challenges in Cytology" textbook.
Ron Bowditch is a well-known scientist and educator in cytology. The programme contains a series of lectures covering the interpretation of crowded sheets, single cells and small groups, and glandular abnormalities. The practical component includes individual microscope study and facilitated multiheader sessions. The programme is based on cytological criteria but the approach examines both methods of screening as well as cytological features using practical workshops and printed material.

The Vocational Registration Programme in Cervical Cytology Specification is now out for consultation under the Clinical Training Agency. All Clinical Directors and Charge Scientists will have a copy of the specification. Feedback re the programme should be sent to Mark Jackson of the CTA by Friday 18 June 2004. email: mark_jackson@moh.govt.nz
The following summary clarifies some of the history and changes that have occurred from previous sector feedback:
The Clinical Training Agency (CTA) is managing this final round of consultation and will contract up to 6 places for the clinical training of BMLSC graduates employed in cytology laboratories.
The CTA elegibility criteria are that a training programme must be vocational, clinical, post entry, a formal programme with a qualification, a minimum of 6 months full time equivalent and nationally recognised. (more details can be had on the CTA website http://www.moh.govt.nz/cta).
The CTA funding will support employers to provide the required resources, training and supervision for new graduate scientists beginning a career in cytology. Please note that cytology laboratories have cited the time, length and cost of inhouse training as a barrier to employing graduates.
The VRPCC will establish a national competence based foundation for specialised post graduate training and provide evidence of competency for scope of practice registration under the Health Practitioner Competency Assurance Act 2003, which is enacted in September 2004.
The MLTB has agreed to provide oversight of the programme.
Changes have been made to the VRPCC Logbook, following sector feedback, with some section exemptions at the discretion of the supervisor in the laboratory. This will avoid unnecessary repetition of undergraduate work, however will allow for revision as per individual need. The Logbook is currently being formatted for printing and final editorial review, subject to this last round of consultation.
The Logbook and other training resources of the VRPCC have / are being developed with the support of the National Screening Unit. This aligns with international practice.
The VRPCC arose from a workforce review and survey, as per the Gisborne Cervical Screening Inquiry recommendations and the subsequent report and further recommendations of Dr Euphemia McGoogan, Independant advisor to the Minister of Health.
