Dr John Smith       Dr Elizabeth Salisbury


Dr J H F Smith B.Sc., M.B., B.S., F.R.C.Path, M.I.A.C.

Dr John H F Smith qualified at The Middlesex Hospital, London in 1977 and subsequently trained in histopathology and cytology at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London and Bristol, where he developed a particular interest in cytology. He was appointed to a consultant post in Sheffield in 1987 and is currently Consultant Histopathologist and Cytopathologist at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Pathology in the University of Sheffield.

Since 1988 he has taken the lead role in gynaecological histopathology and cytology in Sheffield (which is recognised by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for subspecialty training in gynaecological oncology), and since 1998 he has practiced exclusively in gynaecological histopathology and cytology.

He is the Director of Sheffield Cytology Training Centre, which he founded in 1990, and Director of Sheffield Cervical Cytology Service.

He is currently Chairman of the Panel of Examiners in Cytology of the Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath), and has served at various times on working parties and advisory committees of the RCPath, British Society for Clinical Cytology (BSCC), General Medical Council, Clinical Pathology Accreditation (UK) Ltd and the National Health Service Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCSP).

Outside medicine and his family his interests are fly-fishing and hockey.

Dr Elizabeth Salisbury

Dr Elizabeth Salisbury is Head, Section of Cytology, Westmead Hospital, and Senior Pathologist, Breastscreen Western, Western Sydney Area Health Service. Dr Salisbury talked on the role of FNA in breast screening and presented a workshop on her approach to FNA of the breast concentrating on difficult and challenging entities.
